Action of Trivalent Chromium on Rat Liver Structure. Histometric and Haematological Studies International Journal of Morphology
Silva,Rogério Ferreira da; Lopes,Ruberval A; Sala,Miguel A; Vinha,Dionísio; Regalo,Simone C. H.; Souza,Ana Maria de; Gregório,Zita Maria de O.
The trace mineral trivalent chromium (Cr3+) is an essential nutrient involved in the regulation of carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism via an enhancement of insulin action. The present work had as objective to characterize histopathologically and histometrically the hepatic alterations of female Wistar rats, determined by the chromium III administration in drinking water. Adult rats received ration and drinking water ad libitum containing 300 or 500 mg/l chromium III during 4 months. Control animals received only water and ration. All animals were sacrificed by lethal dose of anesthetic. Samples of liver were fixed in 10% formalin for 24 h. Tissues for microscopical pathology were processed using standard procedures. Paraffin sections prepared at 6...

Comportamento e preferência alimentar em Podocnemis expansa (Schweigger), P. unifilis (Troschel) e P. sextuberculata (Cornalia) em cativeiro (Testudines, Pelomedusidae) Zoologia
Malvasio,Adriana; Souza,Ana Maria de; Molina,Flavio de Barros; Sampaio,Francisco de Arruda.
The feeding behavior and the food preference was studied in P. expansa (Schweigger, 1812) P. unifilis (Troschel, 1848) and P. sextuberculata (Cornalia, 1849). The method used for feeding behavior and food preference was the sampling of all occurrences. The Students' t test was applied on the food items, to compare differences during the development of each species. The main conclusions are: feeding behavior for food, except alive animals, is divided in foraging, approach, olfactory recognition, capture, laceration and ingestion; the persecution behavior was observed for prey activity; cleptoparasitism occurs in the three species and neustophagia mechanism was detected in P. unifilis; P. sextuberculata shows to be almost only carnivorous and P. expansa and...

Apoptosis deregulation might have a role in the pathophysiology of polycythemia vera (PV). This study evaluated Bcl-2 molecule expression in CD34+ cells and leukocytes in 12 PV patients. Gene expression was investigated by real time PCR using SybrGreen Quantitect kit and protein expression was evaluated by western-blotting. JAK2 V617F mutation was detected according to Baxter et al (2005). CD34+ cells from PV patients presented higher levels of A1 and Mcl-1 expression (median: 22.6 and 5.2, respectively) in comparison with controls (0.9 and 0.5, p=0.004 and p=0.020); while Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL expression decreased in PV patients (0.18 and 1.19) compared with controls (1.39 and 2.01, p=0.006 and p=0.020). CD34+ cells in PV patients showed an elevated Bid...

Estudo do esqueleto em Trachemys dorbignyi (Duméril & Bibron) (Reptilia, Testudines, Emydidae) Zoologia
Souza,Ana Maria de; Malvasio,Adriana; Lima,Lívia Araújo Brito.
The skeleton of Trachemys dorbignyi (Duméril & Bibron, 1835), based on 16 specimens incluind young and adult of both sexes is described. Designations of some structures are proposed and discussed based on data from literature and norms published in the The World Association of Veterinary Anatomists (1994).

Experimental Lachesis muta rhombeata envenomation and effects of soursop (Annona muricata) as natural antivenom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Cremonez,Caroline Marroni; Leite,Flávia Pine; Bordon,Karla de Castro Figueiredo; Cerni,Felipe Augusto; Cardoso, lara Aimê; Gregório,Zita Maria de Oliveira; Souza,Rodrigo Cançado Gonçalves de; Souza,Ana Maria de; Arantes,Eliane Candiani.
Abstract Background In the Atlantic forest of the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, local population often uses the fruit juice and the aqueous extract of leaves of soursop (Annona muricata L.) to treat Lachesis muta rhombeata envenomation. Envenomation is a relevant health issue in these areas, especially due to its severity and because the production and distribution of antivenom is limited in these regions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relevance of the use of soursop leaf extract and its juice against envenomation by Lachesis muta rhombeata. Methods We evaluated the biochemical, hematological and hemostatic parameters, the blood pressure, the inflammation process and the lethality induced by Lachesis muta rhombeata snake...

WBC count and functional changes induced by co-administration of clofazimine and clarithromycin, in single and multiple doses, in Wistar rats BJPS
Paina,Flávia Aparecida; Miranda,Julise Cunha; Tavares,Cristiane Fernandes de Freitas; Queiroz,Regina Helena da Costa; Souza,Ana Maria de.
Clofazimine and clarithromycin are used to treat leprosy and infections caused by Mycobacterium avium complex. Little data on the toxicity of co-administration of these two drugs are available. Here we evaluated the potential adverse effects of polytherapy with these two drugs in male Wistar rats by determining WBCs counts and other blood cell counts, neutrophilic phagocytosis, and burst oxidative, by flow cytometry. We observed an increase in WBCs, in multiple-dose regimens, and in polymorphonuclear cells, in both single- clarithromycin only and multiple dose regimens. We also observed a reduction in mononuclear cell counts in single and multiple doses. The drugs seem to reverse the mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cell ratio. An increase in oxidative...
